Senior Captains Lead Girls Volleyball to Victory

Captains Step Up in Absence of Coach

This year, the girl varsity volleyball team had an amazing season. Seniors Sierra McRae, Lauren Nguyen and Ella Liao are the senior captains of the San Leandro High Girls Volleyball team. They have played volleyball for six years. McRae and Nguyen have been on the varsity team for three years. Liao has been on the varsity team for two years. McRae is a middle blocker, and an opposite and outside hitter, Nguyen is an outside hitter and Liao is a setter.

The team has been through a challenging year — they were without a coach for most of the season.

A highlight of their season was definitely their senior night. They played against Castro Valley High School and won 3-2. The team worked very well together and McRae, Nguyen, and Liao’s leadership showed through. Dr. Ronnie Richardson was helping with the coaching, but the senior captains had the chance to guide their team.

The girls said they enjoyed playing volleyball at San Leandro High School because they were able to make new friends while doing something they love.

There are many attributes that a team captain should have. McRae, Nguyen, and Liao possess qualities that make them amazing captains and people.

McRae said her “mental strength” is an attribute she has adapted over time and makes her a team player.

“I have the ability to lift others up, even when I am down,” said McRae. She added that this team is her “family” and a great support system.

Nguyen said her biggest strengths are her passion and her ability to be encouraging and supportive.

“ I am able to keep the team’s environment positive and enjoyable,” said Nguyen, who assed that she has had a great experience playing volleyball at San Leandro high school.

What makes Liao a great Captain is her devotion, the energy she creates while playing, and the relationships she has with her teammates.

“I am a positive and social captain,” said Liao.

All three seniors have a bright future ahead of them. They all have had endless support from family and friends and they will continue to be positive and uplifting role models in society.
