Monkey Man is the story of an unnamed character credited as ‘Kid’ letting his festering frustration and urge for revenge let loose. Kid, played by Dev Patel, later named Bobby, is an underground bare fist fighter who wears a ragged and unsettling monkey mask in the fictional city, Yatana. With this movie, Patel shows once again how incredible his acting skills are along with his ability to produce, direct and write a movie.
This film brings you fun and exciting, highly choreographed fighting scenes whether Bobby is winning or losing. In many fight scenes, Bobby chooses unique moves to escape life-or-death situations like biting a man’s nose off or using his teeth to push a knife deeper into a man’s throat when his hands were being pushed away.
Despite all the action and tense moments of the movie, it delivers a good story of losing family and trying to survive in a dog-eat-dog world until Bobby finds someone he never wanted to see again.
With a clever system, he manages to steal the wallet of a wealthy club owner, played by Adithi Kalkunte, only to return the wallet posing as a humble man named Bobby who’s looking for a job. As he starts his new job at this high-end club, he finds the chief of police, played by Sikandar Kher, the man he has loathed since childhood.
It’s an interesting movie considering Bobby’s story is very inspired by the story of Hanuman, the Hindu god of wisdom, strength, courage, devotion and self-discipline. In the very beginning and throughout the movie, Bobby has flashbacks of his mother sharing stories of Hanuman and many times the movie blatantly shows the comparison between Bobby and Hanuman via paintings.Monkey Man is definitely a movie one should watch if they’re a fan of revenge and action but still enjoy great storytelling. It’d give this movie a 4/5 just because of the medical inaccuracy of Bobby being mercilessly attacked over and over again only to be completely fine the next day, with almost zero wounds, was too much for me.
