The College and Career Center offers after school application support, Monday Through Thursday for an hour. With the college application deadlines fast approaching, the College and Career Center has started filling up with stressed seniors looking for support from our counselors.
Jonah Tingzon, a current senior, started attending these support sessions after seeing the College and Career Center publicize their resources via Instagram. With the realization that he had been putting off his UC applications for too long, Tingzon went into the CCC with the goal of getting it done. Tingzon looks forward to the many things to come after finishing his college applications and graduation.
“Mostly what I’m excited for is just being an adult out of highschool, I just know it’s going to be more work so the only thing I can be happy about is just being an adult in college,” Tingzon said.
With the goal of finalizing his applications soon, Joshua Tesorero, a current senior, has sought support from the CCC for clarification and motivation. Prior to starting his college apps, Tesorero was already a part of the Early Academic Outreach Program. Joshua has further utilized the school’s outreach programs by attending support sessions and working closely with the counselors.
“It’s kinda good that I’m doing it in a space where I can have that resource available compared to being at my home where I don’t have the same ability to just go to someone,” said Tesorero. “But there are some moments where I will admit that it is kinda busy in here so it is kind of hard getting one on one time specifically”
Ms. Sierra is the current Early Academic Outreach Program/Destination College Advising Corps adviser. After graduating from UC Davis, Ms. Sierra decided to further her interest in education through the EAOP program. In the time she has been a counselor, Ms. Sierra recognizes recurring challenges students often face with college applications, and is constantly finding solutions to combat these challenges.
“One of the main challenges students have is just starting. They don’t know where to start or where to apply so to combat that issue, we do a lot of workshops here. We have workshops on college list building, major exploration, just to kind of get them started,” said Ms. Sierra.
The enjoyment she feels seeing students get interested in college and succeed has fueled her through the busy hours at the CCC. Ms. Sierra places an importance on students managing their time wisely and utilizing the CCC resources. With some college deadlines due in only a couple of weeks, Ms. Sierra offers advice for seniors currently working on applications.
“I think you should come to the College and Career Center because we are here to relieve that stress,” said Ms. Sierra. “If weekends are the only time for you to have a break, use that to relax so when you come back next week or the week, you’ll be in the mindset to do your applications.”
