The San Leandro High School Social Justice Academy’s (SJA) annual “One Love One Mic” event is on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024 in the SLHS Arts Education Center (AEC) which is located right next to the main building of the campus. The AEC’s doors will open at 4:30pm with performances starting at 5pm. This is the 16th Annual “One Love One Mic” event for SJA that will include student performances and raise awareness of issues members of our school community are trying to navigate. SJA members have been preparing for weeks to make sure they can give the audience a special event to remember.
“Every single member of SJA has a role in making “One Love One Mic” such a special night,” said SJA 11th grader Gaby Carrillo who added, “we have people on lights, props, sets, ticket sales, advertising, script writing, making costumes, flyers and so much more.” According to Carrillo “One Love, One Mic” is “hard to take on, but the community always looks forward to “One Love One Mic” and it is a great way to build solidarity and pay tribute to our ancestors before us.”
SJA is known for actively addressing issues that are relevant to San Leandro High’s students such as the SJA protest to keep a previous San Leandro High Principal, Dr. Ro for the 2023-2024 school year and special events in the quad like the Latiné Heritage Month celebrations, Trans Awareness Events, and much more. SJA is also known for advocating for those who don’t have a voice and speaking on behalf of those who need justice in our community like Steven Taylor, a former San Leandro High student who died shortly after being harassed by the police. These topics are some of what “One Love One Mic” will present at the show.
In addition the SJA seniors are having a “Trust in YOUth” campaign to shed light on the criminalization of students of color and addressing it with a slogan, “Give us a chance to advance.”. This is just a glimpse of what is to come at “One Love One Mic.” Be sure to show up and support SJA, our students and our community.
