When actors are faced with questions of what props should go where, and when or how they should move across the stage, San Leandro High School’s Fall play “Peter and the Starcatcher” director Roberta Inscho knows how to answer them.
Inscho places herself in the actors’ position of wanting to be comfortable and their ideas heard on stage because she has been there herself.
“I realized I was a big picture thinker…I was just an actor who felt like I wanted to know more,” said Inscho.
The play’s director has a bachelor of fine arts in performing arts where she found her passion for directing and making it her job to be at the forefront of productions.
“I was always the actor that would get in trouble because I would be concerned with what everyone else was doing,” said Inscho.
Seeing actors under Inscho’s directorial vision really shows how much she understands the thought process going through a player’s mind when performing.
“You get to model the production in a way that you think it should be with collaboration of the people you work with, like the designers and the actors,” Inscho said.
Not only does the director resonate with the actors on stage being a performer herself, she also keeps that in mind when crafting a show. A good director follows actor feedback to allow them to be more comfortable on stage, said Inscho.
When confronted with a question about how she feels the production is moving along, Inscho said, “so far, I’m very impressed with everyone’s creativity.”
Director Inscho values the ensemble’s ideas of how to make a cohesive show. If the cast goes into rehearsal feeling un-represented, then the show will end up feeling unnatural on stage.
“I would love to come back if the department… would have me,” said Inscho.
Inscho feels that the program has really made an impression on her, and that the show is really coming together at a good pace compared to productions she has worked on.
“So I imagine if there is an opening, the department would contact me and let me know if something was available, and if there was, I would say yes.”
