Guillermo del Toro’s take on Frankenstein sets a tone of compassion for The Creature making it a tragic romance classic. Del Toro was able to use his interpretation of the iconic novel by Mary Shelly to add his own ideas.
This film is a must watch for people up to the rollercoaster. Del Toro portrayed Victor (Oscar Isaac) as the actual villain by showing The Creature’s side of the story. Jacob Elordi brought sympathy and compassion to The Creature as his acting allowed the viewers to see The Creature as more believable and as the victim.
One particular scene that stood out was the wolf attack, a deep scene where The Creature courageously fought wolves attacking an old blind man. This scene allows the viewer to see beyond The Creature, we see the good intentions and initiate innocence of The Creature as his immediate reaction was to protect the old blind man. This scene proves the previous assumptions made of The Creature wrong.
The Character’s amazing costumes and makeup portraying Europe in 1818 was an essential part for the movie to set its setting and mood. Even though the film was an outstanding hit for Del Toro, I did feel as if the movie was more focused on unnecessary points like Victor’s childhood instead of the essential points of the story, making the ending feel almost as if it was rushed.
In conclusion, Guillermo Del Toro’s version of Frankenstein is an amazing film with a great set tone of empathy for The Creature. I rate this film a 4.5 out of 5. The film is a must watch for viewers looking for emotional resonance and a memorable experience.
