The Black Phone is a suspenseful horror film about a shy boy named Finney who is kidnapped by a masked killer and locked in a soundproof basement. While trapped, he discovers an old black phone on the wall that suddenly begins to ring. Even though the phone is disconnected, the voices of the killer’s past victims speak to him through it, giving him clues and advice on how to escape. As Finney listens to the ghosts and gathers courage, he gradually devises a plan to fight back and survive. The movie blends fear, mystery and bravery, showing how even in a terrifying situation, someone can find the strength to face their fears and try to escape. 

Junior Kassandra Yigezawa said the movie was interesting, even though she usually doesn’t watch movies about kidnapping or crime, “I think it was really interesting because I don’t watch many kidnapping movies,” Yigezawa said. “But I think they portrayed it well.” 

Yigezawa also explained that the newer movie, Black Phone 2, felt scarier because it had more jump scares, which increased the story’s intensity. Another aspect that stood out to her was the ghosts’ phone calls. Yigezawa said the ghost calls made the story more powerful and added more detail because they revealed what happened to the other victims before the main character. Yigezawa explained that hearing the victims’ voices helped the audience understand the danger and made the story more emotional. Yigezawa thought both movies were interesting and believes students who enjoy horror or suspense stories would like watching them.

Junior Karina Trinh shared a similar opinion about the film, “I would recommend the movie to other students our age, especially if they like horror or suspense movies,” Trinh said. She first heard about the movie on TikTok, where many people posted about it and discussed the new release, “The movie was a little scary because of the loud jump scares in certain scenes,” Trinh said. She preferred the Black Phone 2 because it focused on more characters and had more action, which made it more engaging to watch. Trinh thinks students who enjoy horror or suspense movies would find the film exciting and fun to watch.

The Black Phone shows courage through the main character. He had to be brave to deal with his situation because he was kidnapped and trapped in a soundproof basement with no easy way to escape. Even though he was scared, he kept thinking of ways to survive, which shows how strong and determined he was. This movie is not just about fear, but also about having courage during difficult situations. 

The Black Phone deserves 5/5 stars because it is a good experience and highly recommended based on how interesting and scary it is.
