The San Leandro High Olympics, a tradition that was recently brought back to this school, occurred again this year. Students and staff got into teams and competed against each other in a week-long competition with fun games and activities; dodgeball, jeopardy and relay races. Both staff and students were brought together by the San Leandro High Olympics all, while showcasing pirate pride.
“You know, a lot of things came into the equation when we had to find out which games we’re going to use,” said senior Michael Fuller. “And we had started off with multiple options that we all voted on, then we had gone with those and made sure we had the materials for each game that we were going to do on each day.”
Planning each game took a lot of time and dedication from everyone.
“I feel like the relay race and dodgeball were really exciting because a lot of people we knew were going to be very competitive in those games, and we had to put a lot of time into setting those up and cleaning them up,” said senior Sophia Celestino.
Leadership had a fun time planning the exciting games for the Olympics. An important thing they had in mind was how these games would connect the community.
“I think it puts the community a lot together, because different classes get to collaborate,” said senior Rachel Emnace. “You get to pick your teams, and then just everyone talking and competing about who’s going to win. It brings people closer together.”
Emnace expressed that the competitive spirit of the week-long competitions brought everyone together.
“You know, I think it’s very impactful for us to be having the Olympics. It makes us bond,” said Emnace. “And I think the Olympics is just something that people like to watch.”
