Leading the Pirates to an outstanding start while maintaining an outstanding GPA, Varsity Boys Basketball Senior Captain Elijah Rubio has proven that his goals–either playing professional basketball in the Philippines or becoming an aviation mechanic–are well within reach, earning him the honor of being November’s Athlete of the Month.
Elijah’s hard work and discipline pushes him every day, resulting in him being Athlete of the Month.
“I never really felt the pressure of being a leader, ” said Rubio.
He believes that being a leader is something he was born into.
“It’s kind of hard to lead a team that doesn’t believe in you,” Rubio said. “ We always got each other’s backs.”
Rubio’s leadership is based on the truth: You can’t lead a team that doesn’t believe in you.
“I’ve been serving as a team captain for a really long time,” said Rubio. “That experience, it’s a lot of weight on your shoulders.”
Despite Rubio’s trials and tribulations, he still exceeds all expectations of pioneering the team.
“All of my uncles played in college,” said Rubio. “And I was just kind of inspired by them and wanted to reach that high level.”
Basketball runs in Rubio’s family, it’s no surprise he lives up to that expectation.
“I could play overseas back in my home country in the Philippines,” said Rubio. “If I go [in a] career path, I want to be an aviation technician[or]mechanic, [to] work on planes.”
Rubio has big plans set up after his high school career, on the hardwood or in the airplane hangar.
“It’s very cliche, but really, the baseline is you have to work hard. ”said Rubio.
